Although Canada adopted a gender-neutral definition of marriage in 2005, several legal challenges remain for same-sex couples.

Same-sex couples, whether married or unmarried, may face barriers to adoption. Barriers may also arise in the administration of an estate when one partner passes away. When a same-sex relationship comes to an end, issues of property division and co-parenting may be emotional and complex.
